 Training

What is it I need - a trainer, coach or an instructor? There are so many different titles that people hold now - which is most appropriate for me?

Ask yourself what you really think your need is. If you are still lacking confidence in your skill as a rider then it is an instructor that you may find most helpful .They have the training, patience and skill to educate and develop you. If you have always ridden and wish to develop specific skills then a trainer will help you to focus on the requirements necessary to do so.

Coaching

It may be that in fact we all need a bit of help from all three of the above at different times but unfortunately once we get into a regular training regime flexibility is often not encouraged. As much as I am intolerant of people who flit from trainer to trainer giving noones training system a chance. if you have your training ethos in place and fully understand your objectives you should be able to hand pick the help necessary to further your understanding and future riding career. As a coach I see my role as the guide to finding the right help at the right time if necessary.

By definition coaching is looking at the subject holistically i.e looking at the whole picture.Everything from feeding and management, saddle fit, bitting and rider fitness has to be discussed in order to take the combination forward in their training. The UK Coaching Certificates  have recently been introduced and having just taken my level 2 exam I`m looking forward to taking level 3.The Coaching style is more reflective of my own training ideal.Rider and Trainer need to be a team and discussion and understanding of each persons role is essential. The clients that I have been involved with ,some for many years, enjoy the fact that we discuss and chart progress and constantly bring on board different professionals to help tweak and improve the whole. Check out the "back up team page" for just some of them!

Personal Training

I have always been enthusiastic about training having started riding overseas as a child and being taught by an ex cavalryman it has always seemed natural to me to want to develop further my understanding and skill. Joining my local Pony Club Branch ( The Old Berks) I continued with my proficiency certificates . Having started my professional training at Talland and taken my exams I was lucky enough to be able to continue to train with some excellent people. Different people influence you in different ways and eventually you start to develop your own style and you find particular people with which you really empathise and plan to train with for the duration.I was incredibly lucky to meet Flemming Thomsen who I have trained with since 2003. My other trainer who needs no introduction is Carl Hester. I have been lucky enough to have had help from Carl since 2004. Both my trainers are compatible and respect each other enormously.I have to date trained 3 different horses with them both. My latest horse I am currently competing at Prix St. Georges

However commitment to whichever trainer you choose is essential- there are no miracles out there!

But without your regular trainer that ensures you are sound in the basics and ride in a consistent way with control and confidence there is little use spending money with some of the "Masters" if that knowledge is not fully in place to take advantage of the advise they will then be able to deliver.

It is so important that we recognise the clear difference s in the  roles of these individuals in order not to be disappointed .

As a coach I feel my role is to recognise when my clients require specific help and quickly suggest they see the appropriate people. I will be judged by my riders successful development with their horse. I do not feel threatened by the fear of losing a client by exposing them to new input my philosophy is always to develop and expand the "Team "as necessary to give us an ever deeper tool box to be able to dip into.

We have many different trainers visiting Gainfield as well as the constant "at home" training.During the summer there are the once a month Open Dressage shows in order to test out your training!

To train or not to train and who to train with? This is a question for each individual and there is no right or wrong answer. Firstly you have to define training. In order to train you have to technically be prepared to be out of your comfort zone if you are not, then you are not "training" so it is essential that you are comfortable with your Trainer.

Learning styles

Each of us has a tendency to prefer a particular learning style so it it is natural that we will all try to pick a trainer who teaches in this style.

We have a variety of quality trainers visiting Gainfield to help you find a style you like.
